Utility-scale Solar Projects

Marathon County has seen growing interest in large solar developments, although no single solar project currently appears to be advancing at the same scale or visibility as Hub City Wind.

Several solar proposals have been discussed in various towns, particularly where transmission infrastructure and large agricultural parcels are available. Solar development interest has generally focused on:

  • Agricultural land conversion

  • Transmission access

  • Potential battery storage integration

  • Local zoning and ordinance authority

Recently, county discussions have referenced neighboring projects such as Saratoga Solar as examples when considering future solar and battery-storage regulation, even though that project is outside Marathon County. These examples are frequently cited in local policy discussions regarding JDAs, battery storage, road agreements, and local authority.
